Easy whelping plans
You should start off by buying a puppy X pen if you have a large dog buy the taller one if you have a small dog you can by a lower one. For large dogs you should make a wood frame that is at least 6 inches high, to fit on the inside of the puppy x pen, this way no pups will get caught in the wires of the x pen. You should put L-Brackets on the corners of the wood to hold them together inside and out, or you can put double hinges on them to fold up when you are done with it. You want to coat the wood with Thompson's water sealer to make sure it does not get damage from the blood and other discharge your female might have during birthing make sure after every use you bleach the wood
You can use sheets or blankets at delivery time, after that you want to put carpet down this way the pups do not get tangled up in sheets or blankets and someone steps on them or the mother lays on them. You will want a heating lamp to attach to the cage at the top to keep the pups warm, You will also need a heating pad to place pups on while mom is having them or in case one would be cold to warm it up, you will also need rubber gloves to fill up with warm water to get the pups warm quickly remember puppies do not usually nurse if they are cold. Also on the heating pad make sure not to burn the pup
We bottle feed our pups from day one- reason being if something happens the pups will fight you on changing their food and it is hard to get a week pup to start eating again especially a new formula. We protect our pups from getting week, we get them use to the formula right off the bat. The formula we use and have used for years now is one can carnation evaporated milk, to one can hot water, one egg yolk, and a little sugar. If we have a litter of pups that are little we will supplement the water for pedi lite. We also give HI VITE drops you can purchase these usually from vets office without prescription. We use regular baby bottles.
You should feed week puppies every two hours the other puppies can be feed every 3-4 hours these are the maximum times earlier the better. Some pups will eat other's will not this is one way to know who is getting to nurse off of mom and who is being pushed back by the other puppies

This pen can be used all the way up till the pups leave here at 5 weeks of age. I have food/water bowls in the cage, I use very little pine shavings for absorbency and shred newspaper over top of that to keep the puppies from inhaling the pine shavings dust or eating them

The nice thing about this set up is it can be taken down and put away or folded up and left next to a wall or something
Now some tips Banfield hospital inside of petsmart stores offer a breeding program where you get your pups examined free and they give you a 30.00 coupon to be used state wide for each one of your customers. Plus you get 15 percent off your vet bills as a breeder. Also your local HEALTH DEPARTMENTS usually have a Rabies clinic for 6.00 they will give your animal a one year Rabies or a 3 year Rabies if your dog has had a Rabies Vaccination before. Also allot of vets have what is called clinic days where you go in and just pay for the vaccination you are getting no exam fee. You can also sign up through IAMS or other company's for their breeder program this will give you puppy food to give out with each of your puppies free. I believe NUVET has this offer to so you can give each one of your customers vitamins for there pup free of charge

This is a puppy coming out backwards they usually come out head first but lady has them butt first. They usually come out in a bag filled with fluid this one did not but it lived. The mother usually breaks the bag and then cleans the puppy up usually eating the afterbirth which I hear is good for them and brings their milk in.
